About South Africa

South Africa is located at the southernmost tip of Africa with a coastline that stretches across two oceans. It’s known for its diversity in cultures, ethnicity, languages and religious beliefs. It also has the reputation of being a country experiencing one of the most severe AIDS epidemics in the world. According to a UNAIDS 2010 Report , at the end of 2009, there was approximately 5.6 million people living with HIV in South Africa, making South Africa’s epidemic the largest in the world. Hospitals are currently struggling to cope with the growing number of HIV-related patients, and patients living with HIV are expected by the Inter Press Service News Agency to soon account for 60-70% of medical expenditures in South African hospitals.
